Barcelona vs Espanyol Live Stream: Barcelona has a chance to move within a point of Real Madrid on Wednesday when Lionel Messi and company take on regional rival Espanyol for Matchday 35 in La Liga. Barca entered the day four points back after a big win at Villarreal over the weekend. If Barca can win here, they will put all the pressure on Real for their match on Friday against Deportivo Alaves.
That 4-1 win at Villarreal could be the turning point. Four matches remain for Barca, and they have to win out. Even if they do, that is no guarantee that they win the league. So many dropped points over the last few weeks has put them in a tough spot. The attack was electric though against the Yellow Submarine, and they should expect similar outputs the rest of the way. They just have to hope and pray Real Madrid lays an egg. First thing is first though, and that’s taking care of what they can control.
This is as big of a must-win game as ever for Espanyol. If the club fails to win, their relegation will be cemented. Talk about pressure. Losers of five in a row, Espanyol has scored just two goals in its last six games. The defense isn’t that bad, and they keep things close, but that inability to score has been their downfall. For a team that was in Europa League this season, it’s been a sad fall to the bottom of the table.
Barca makes quick work of their regional rival and takes home the victory. Pick: Barcelona 3, Espanyol 0. Barcelona can put the pressure back on Real Madrid as champions host rivals Espanyol in el Derbi Barcelonés tonight.
Barca sit four points behind LaLiga leaders Real Madrid with four games left, and Real’s superior head-to-head record means they would have to drop five points for Barca to stand any chance of winning the title.
Real’s next game comes against Alaves on Friday, so Barca can temporarily close the gap to a point with a win at Camp Nou. Barcelona coach Quique Setien is set to stick with Antoine Griezmann in attack after the Frenchman shone alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in Sunday’s 4-1 win at Villarreal.
Griezmann returned to the starting XI at the Estadio de la Ceramica after two games on the bench and scored a fine goal in what was Barca’s best performance since Setien’s arrival in January. The French forward started in a central role next to Suarez, with Messi deeper, and Setien is likely to keep those tactics for the visit of relegation-threatened Espanyol.
Sergi Roberto could feature again after impressing in a midfield role against Villarreal as Barca seek a win to stay in the title race and move provisionally to within a point of leaders Real Madrid, in action at home to Alaves on Friday.
Frenkie de Jong was back in training for Barca on Tuesday after a calf problem which has seen him miss the last few games, but the Dutch midfielder has not been named in the squad for the Catalan derby.
Defenders Samuel Umtiti and Junior Firpo also miss out through injury, along with long-term absentee Ousmane Dembele, who is not eligible to play in LaLiga anyway this season after he was deregistered to allow Barca to sign striker Martin Braithwaite in February.
